2007 ACA-Southern Region Leadership Conference
Cherishing our Past; Envisioning our Future!
Location: Williamsburg, Virginia (Williamsburg Hospitality House)
Date: Thursday, October 18-Sunday, October 21, 2007
ACA-Southern Region Leaders and others interested in attending this year’s ACA-Southern Region Leadership Development Conference:
I am pleased to ‘welcome’ you to this year’s ACA-Southern Region Leadership Conference. The conference will be held at the Williamsburg Hospitality House (located in close proximity to the historical sites of Williamsburg, Virginia and the College of William and Mary). The conference begins promptly on Thursday, October 18, 2007, at 1pm, and will conclude on Sunday, October 21, 2007, at 11am. The theme of this year’s conference is Cherishing our Past; Envisioning our Future!
This year’s conference is designed to provide participants a most educational, enjoyable, and enriching experience! Highlighting the conference will be a featured speaker, Ms. Hedy Schliefer; a musician playing tunes from the Colonial era; numerous interest sessions related to effective branch leadership; a visit to the Williamsburg Farmers Market in Merchants Square; an opportunity for Southern Region attendees to reflect upon and refine our region practices; a performance of Colonial Williamsburg’s Cry Witch Trial; and in the spirit of cherishing our past, an optional Old Timers’ Dutch Treat Dinner!
Early registration should be completed no later than September 20. 2007. Registration should be completed on-line. Hotel reservations will be made through ACA-Southern Region; again, this will be completed on-line. We’ve attempted to keep your hotel costs to a minimum; rooms are $90 a night, including tax! Attendees who take flights to Williamsburg may arrive/depart at any of three airports; travel information is posted online for the airports, airlines, shuttle options, and distances.
For those who might not have attended a previous ACA-Southern Region Conference, please be aware that there are fewer than 100 attendees so conference participants will have the chance to ‘get to know’ their counseling colleagues. Our ACA President, Brian Canfield, and ACA staff members, including ACA Executive Director Richard Yep, will be joining us. Conference attendees will have a unique opportunity to network with ACA and branch leaders. Emerging leaders and interested first timers will be provided Emerging Leaders Training, facilitated by Dr. Pat Schwallie-Giddis and Dr. Marie Wakefield.
The Williamsburg Hospitality House is located across the street from the College of William and Mary. The address is: 415 Richmond Road, Williamsburg, Virginia, 23185. Phone is: 757-229-4020; Fax is: 757-220-1560. However, please remember that hotel bookings should be made through ACA-Southern Region.
CEU’s will be available! Attendees who participate in all conference programs may earn over 12 CEU’s. A tentative agenda of the conference program is attached for your planning.
Just to highlight each day:
On Thursday, we begin with first Interest Sessions as well as the first session of Emerging Leaders Training promptly at 1pm. Later that afternoon is a reception for our emerging leaders and first timers. Those individuals, accompanied by Southern Region officers, will then go to dinner in small groups (Dutch treat) while others will have a chance for dinner at restaurants nearby. Our initial General Session (at which you’ll hear from our featured speaker) will begin promptly at 7:30pm. (Please arrive on time!) Following the kickoff, the Virginia Counselors Association hosts the Opening Reception.
The second General Session is first on Friday’s agenda. At this time, attendees will again hear our featured speaker, employ a model of knowledge-based governance to reflect upon and refine our region practices, and conduct items of business. ACA President Brian Canfield will address the group at the luncheon which follows. The afternoon is composed of Interest Sessions in which those who hold similar branch association leadership roles will have sharing sessions. Emerging Leaders Training continues during this time. That evening dinner is ‘on your own’ and then all will be treated to a Colonial Williamsburg performance of Cry Witch.
Saturday starts more leisurely, with time for an optional trip to the Williamsburg Farmers Market. A third General Session, composed of both a business meeting and a presentation on ‘Recruiting and Retaining the New Generation of Counselors,’ follows. Saturday’s luncheon will include our traditional gift exchange; branch presidents, don’t forget to bring a gift ($50 value) to share. Interest sessions are scheduled for the afternoon and during the evening, conference participants may partake in a variety of local activities, including the optional Old Timers’ Dutch Treat Dinner. (There is no party scheduled this year; Halloween is not this weekend!)
Our concluding General Session is scheduled for Sunday morning. Be prepared to vote (elections will take place on Sunday morning!) and discuss any unfinished matters of Southern Region business.
No doubt, I hope each of you will plan to join us in Williamsburg as we’ll celebrate ourselves, our profession, and our region…while envisioning ACA-Southern Region’s future! Please contact me (my contact information is listed on the registration information document which will be forthcoming) should you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Jeff
